Caroline J. Sutton - Psychotherapist

I am a registered BACP Counsellor and Psychotherapist with experience of working with clients from many walks of life and motivations to enter therapy. Prior to opening my private practice I completed an internship and then worked in private healthcare where I facilitated a range of group therapy sessions and managed an individual caseload.

During my years in private practice I have experienced a natural shift in my professional philosophy towards a more relational and existential orientation.  I feel this approach helps to build therapy on the basic conditions of human existence, such as choice, the freedom and responsibility to shape one’s life, and self-determinism. Therapy is shaped to the individual needs of clients and above all, the relationship with my client is central to my work.

This way of being with my clients eventually culminated in my pursuing post graduate training in Focusing oriented psychotherapy and to adopting a more experiential focus in my work. I believe this enables my clients to gain a deeper awareness of what they are experiencing and to integrate this awareness, leading to positive change.  In general, I practice what is called an integrative approach, which involves drawing from a range of therapeutic models in order to tailor therapy to the individual needs of the client.

Some of the areas I have experience in working include:

  • depression,
  • anxiety,
  • abuse,
  • loss,
  • eating disorders,
  • interpersonal difficulties,
  • personal development.

On a more personal level I have had the pleasure to spend over 20 years living in diverse countries within Africa, Europe and the Middle East.  These experiences have helped me in my own journey towards self-awareness but have also led me to develop a keen respect for human rights and individual difference and to strive for a non-judgmental approach in my life and work.  I currently live in Bristol with my family.
